Why Join Cub Scouts?
Your time is valuable. Families struggle to find time to spend together. Cub Scouting supports your family by providing ready-made opportunities for your and your child to bond.
Your child needs to belong to a group of kids their own age. Through the sense of belonging, they build self-esteem and learn to get along with others. As a parent, you want to be assured the groups your child joins will teach values consistent with good citizenship, character development, and physical fitness.
The Boy Scouts of America has been weaving lifelong values into fun and educational activities since 1910.
How Does Cub Scouting Work?
A unique thing about Cub Scouting is that you, a family, join in on the program and help your child along the way. Family is the basis of Cub Scouting. Cub Scouts exists to support and help enrich your family time together.
There is a unique age-appropriate handbook for each grade level. As a Cub Scout advances through the activities in the books, the Scout will earn badges and other recognition for their uniform.
How Is The Program Structured?
Your child will be part of a DEN.
A Den is a small group of boys in the same grade level who meet either monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly.
All Dens, from Kindergarten through 5th Grade, make up the Pack.
The meeting is led by the Den Leader and Assistant Den Leader.
Your child will be part of a PACK.
Once a month, the Den and Cub Scout families gather at the Pack meeting.
This meeting is an opportunity for Scouts to show off the new skills they have learned and be recognized for any badges or awards they have earned.
The meeting is run by the Cub Master and Assistant Cub Master.
Frequently Asked Questions
How old does my child need to be to join Cub Scouts?
Cub Scouts are open to boys in 5K through 5th Grade. Older Scouts may join Boy Scout Troop 47.
Are Cub Scouts open to boys and girls?
Pack 47 is open to boys.
As a parent, how much will I participate?
For younger Scouts (5K and 1st grade), a parent will be required to attend all Scout activities including Den Meetings. It's recommended - and appreciated! - that parents participate in events for older Scouts as well. All of Pack 47's events are very family-friendly, so older and younger siblings are welcome to attend as well!
We also are always looking for - and greatly appreciate! - parents volunteering to help with Den and Pack activities. Volunteering doesn't have to be a long-term commitment; even coming early or staying late on event days helps!
How much does Cub Scouting cost?
Pack 47 operates in a unique way. We feel it is important that all families have the opportunity to participate in all Scouting activities, so we make it a priority not to charge ongoing activity fees throughout the year. Our Scouts work together in our annual Popcorn Sale to help raise money to fund our Pack's activities. The money raised from these sales means that we do not have any other fees to participate in the Rain Gutter Regatta, Pinewood Derby, Camping, or Blue & Gold Dinner.
Each year, each Scout does have a $75 membership fee which is paid to the Boy Scouts of America.
Which Den will my Scout be in?
Cub Scouts are grouped together according to their grade-level in school.
5K - Lion
1st Grade - Tiger
2nd Grade - Wolf
3rd Grade - Bear
4th & 5th Grade - Webelo
After a Scout completes Webelo level, they will advance to Boy Scouts with our local Troop 47.
How much of a time commitment is Cub Scouts?
Depending on your Scout's age, they will have Den meetings once a month, bi-weekly, or weekly. Pack 47 has only one "official" Pack Meeting - the first one of the year. The rest of the Pack Meetings are held at the outings or activities. Cub Scout events and activities are typically held once a month, though we have our month-long Popcorn Sale fundraiser and other community service projects that may span several weeks or weekends. You can view our Calendar and take a look at our Pack's Events to see what we'll be up to this year!
